Well I fought with the computer all weekend. Last night, I switched hard drives to go back to an old version. This morning, the power went out. So now I’m home with no power or internet. Just a trusty iPhone. Is it time to venture to the office?

Today’s logic. We may need to postpone the election, because so many people are afraid of the virus, which is a hoax, and which China tried to cover up. So many people are afraid, that we expect a huge number of them to vote by mail, which will lead Russia, who isn’t interfering in our elections, to interfere by mail, which doesn’t work anyway, because the post office is broken. Just a little delay will enable us to get a vaccine, which will let us open up safely, which you shouldn’t take, because they cause autism and also have microchips, but it will be a great vaccine, that will protect everyone from the virus, which us going to disappear, and isn’t that bad, just bad enough to sue China, but not US corporations, who outsource all their manufacturing to China, which shouldn’t postpone Hong Kong’s elections. Listen to your local leaders about the hurricane, but not face masks, and maybe not statues. And let’s go ahead and get the military to distribute the vaccine.

So let’s follow the logic today. People/Trump think Covid-19 is a hoax. So they won’t wear face masks, which are free or cheap, or social distance. However, to prevent getting the hoax, it’s a good idea to take hydroxychloroquine, a prescription drug with serious side effects, and to get tested daily, along with everyone around you, who must wear masks, but not you, except once or twice to prove you can. And to quarantine anyone who gets it, unless they are in the hospital for a month after attending your rally like Herman Cain. And all of this is somehow part of an elaborate scheme, which is China’s fault, because they started the virus which is a hoax, and failed to warn us, so that we could not take the necessary precautions, because it isn’t that dangerous, to get the Democrats to shut down the economy, which worked in other countries, but not here, to hurt your re-election chances. The solution is to form a secret police to protect our statues by abducting people near sites where vandalism occurs, and to let your friends out of prison early, because of the danger that they might get the hoax virus, which they will be safe from outside, where they won’t take any precautions.

hoax noun: a humorous or malicious deception People should using “hoax” to describe things which are complicated, over hyped, politicized, etc. It’s a subtle and misleading way to imply conspiracy with a word, and no evidence.

I have been part of a study at Wake Forest on COVID-19, and was given an antibody test. According to the test, I have G and M antibodies, which means that I had the virus. The doctor thinks it was “recent,” but more than two weeks ago, and the test I took is probably > 90% accurate. Since early on, I have worn a mask, and washed my hands regularly. I haven’t been to a party, indoor dining, or anything else besides work and essential shopping. The few times I have socialized, we were outdoors, six feet apart, and five or less people. I didn’t have a fever, cough, or any other obvious symptoms. I had some subtle symptoms that in retrospect might have been from it. I still have some. At work, I have been careful, since I often touch people’s keyboards, and sometimes are closer that six feet. Many people have been close to me without masks. Since I wore one, there is a fairly low chance I gave it to them, but it’s not as low as it could have been. My takeaways are that if you are out in the world around people not distancing and masking, it must be very hard to avoid getting it. The way things are going here, almost everyone is going to get it. Hopefully, they won’t have any problems. But we know that it’s likely some will. If we can slow it enough to keep hospital beds free, we can get though this. But I worry about schools opening, and universities returning. I hope those I know who are not masking and distancing will take my experience into account, and change their behavior. It may not protect them, but it can help us all if it slows down infections. I am still taking precautions, because doctors say it’s not certain that we can’t be reinfected, or relapse, and I don’t want to make things worse.

If you feel the need to open carry without a mask in the pet store that has a conspicuous “masks required” sign, and walk down the isle behind me passing a few inches away, you better watch your back. Because the next person you disregard might not be as peaceful.
